چکیده
Abstract Electrochemical corrosion of lower-activity spent fuel simulants, SIMFUELs, has been investigated in support on-going analogous studies a real AGR nuclear electrode. Two electrode coupling methods have investigated, to study the sample 25 GWd/tU SIMFUEL pellet 20/25/Nb cladding replicate setup. Method-1 involves individual standalone electrodes, while Method-2 and within same For both methods, open circuit potentials linear sweep voltammetry measurements were conducted electrolyte solutions containing 30 μmol/m 3 NaCl, dosed with NaOH pH 8, 11.4 12.5. Resultant data compared single-component electrodes. presents inconsistent electrochemical behaviour which we attribute pitting/crevice effects on cladding, whereas shows consistent that most resembles component. Instant Release Fraction Corrosion Studies of Commercial UO2 BWR Spent Nuclear Fuel
The instant release fraction of a spent nuclear fuel is a matter of concern in the performance assessment of a deep geological repository since it increases the radiological risk. Corrosion studies of two different spent nuclear fuels were performed using bicarbonate water under oxidizing conditions to study their instant release fraction. From each fuel, cladded segments and powder samples obt...
متن کاملRoles of Radiolytic and Externally Generated H2 in the Corrosion of Fractured Spent Nuclear Fuel.
A 2-D model for the corrosion of spent nuclear fuel inside a failed nuclear waste container has been modified to determine the influence of various redox processes occurring within fractures in the fuel. The corrosion process is driven by reaction of the fuel with the dominant α radiolysis product, H2O2. A number of reactions are shown to moderate or suppress the corrosion rate, including H2O2 ...
متن کاملThe influence of hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen on the corrosion of simulated spent nuclear fuel.
The synergistic influence between H(2)O(2) and H(2) on the corrosion of SIMFUEL (simulated spent nuclear fuel) has been studied in solutions with and without added HCO(3)(-)/CO(3)(2-). The response of the surface to increasing concentrations of added H(2)O(2) was monitored by measuring the corrosion potential in either Ar or Ar/H(2)-purged solutions. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy it wa...
متن کاملWater corrosion of spent nuclear fuel: radiolysis driven dissolution at the UO2/water interface.
X-ray diffraction has been used to probe the radiolytic corrosion of uranium dioxide. Single crystal thin films of UO(2) were exposed to an intense X-ray beam at a synchrotron source in the presence of water, in order to simultaneously provide radiation fields required to split the water into highly oxidising radiolytic products, and to probe the crystal structure and composition of the UO(2) l...
متن کاملMinimizing the Repository Volume for Spent Nuclear Fuel
When minimizing the size of the spent nuclear fuel repository, two parameters are important: the required total number of canisters and distance between neighbouring canisters (the canister array pitch). If the latter is kept fixed, the Canister Filling Problem arises. On the other hand, if the former is assumed minimal, we come across the Alternative Canister Filling Problem. Both problems are...
